I examine Kant's conception of understanding, by an analogy he draws between the understanding and an organism. I begin by examining the Critique of Judgment's account of the spontaneity distinctive of an organism. I then show how, on the account of the Critique of Pure Reason, what is distinctive of the spontaneity of cognition is its being apperceptive: to understand, on this account, is to apperceive in a certain way.
