Location

The Ancient Philosophy Workshop sessions will be in Room 501 of Rudder Tower on the Texas A&M University campus.

Times and Dates

The Workshop will begin Thursday, April 3, in the evening, with the first paper at 7:00 PM, and end Saturday, April 5. The last Workshop session is scheduled to end at 6:00 PM on Saturday, but there will be arrangements for dinner for those who plan to stay through Saturday night.

Air Travel

American and Continental Airlines fly to College Station. American flies through Dallas (DFW), Continental through Houston (IAH). The College Station airport (CLL) is very close to the University campus (strictly speaking, it's on the campus, but it's approximately 3 miles from the Workshop location. Cabs and hotel shuttles are available at the airport, but we will also be coordinating transportation to the

Driving Directions

This campus map provides the location of Rudder Tower, the MSC Hotel, and the nearest parking garage. Click the "Directions" link on the map in order to get driving directions from wherever you are to the Workshop.. However, you may want to check the directions given below: Google sometimes picks rather more picturesque routes (e.g. in coming from Austin) than one might like.

From Houston: College Station is 90 miles northwest of Houston on Texas Highway 6 (take US 290 from Houston; at Hempstead, exit north onto TX 6. When you reach College Station, exit at University Drive and go west (left) towards the University. The campus is about two miles ahead, Signs will tell you to exit from TX 6 earlier on a left-lane exit for Texas Avenue/Business TX 6. This is indeed a shorter route, but traffic on Texas Avenue can be frightful, especially since the roade is under construction for most of the distance to the University. (Google Maps will tell you to leave TX 6 for FM 2154 shortly north of Navasota, which will take you to the opposite side of the main campus. This is shorter, but you may encounter more traffic.)

From Austin: Take US 290 to TX 21 and go east on 21 to TX 47. Exit on 47 south (the only option) and stay on 47 until it ends at TX 60; go left (east) on 60, which becomes University Drive and passes the northwest side of campus. (NOTE: Do not take TX 21 all the way to Bryan unless you have a need to kill some time. Google Maps will tell you instead to get on FM 166 at Caldwell and then meander about until you get to TX 60. Take this route if you have a strong preference for meandering).

From Dallas: Take I-45 south to Madisonville and exit onto US 190. Take US 190 west to TX 6 (in Bryan). Go south on TX 6 to University Drive in College Station, and go right on University Drive towards the Texas A&M campus. If you wish to avoid some of I-45 at the price of driving on a 2-lane road, exit at Richland instead of Madisonville onto TX 14, then take TX 14 all the way to its end at TX 6, about 10 miles north of Caldwell; continue on TX 6 south to College Station. (Google Maps prefers that you take I-45 to a nameless location north of Madisonville, exit onto US 79, turn south at Normangee onto FM 39, and get on US 190 at North Zulch. This may be slightly shorter, but it's probably easier to follow the route above.)

From Fort Worth: Take I-35W south to Waco; at Waco, exit onto the 340 loop east and continue to TX 6; take TX 6 to College Station (about 90 miles). Exit at University Drive and go west towards the campus.

From Points North: I-35 splits into I-35W and I-35E at Denton, north of Dallas/Fort Worth. If you're coming from north of there, it's easier to take I-35W through Forth Worth (and continue as in the directions above).

From Elsewhere: If you're driving from San Antonio, or from somewhere west by way of I-10, you have two options. The simplest is to take I-35 all the way to Austin and then follow the directions from there. For a shorter route, which involves a good deal of two-lane road, take I-35 from San Antonio and exit onto TX 80 east, then turn left (just as you're leaving San Marcos) onto TX 21. From there, stay on 21 all the way to 47, as from Austin. If you go this way, note that a little before Bastrop, TX 21 merges with TX 71; on the other side of Bastrop, you will need to turn left onto 21 again (and right not long after that). If you're coming from somewhere east on I-10, get on the I-610 loop north as you are getting in to Houston and follow it around to US 290. Or, if you'd like to avoid Houston, exit I-10 in Beaumont onto US 69/96/287 north; then, just outside Beaumont, get onto TX 105 west and follow it all the way to Navasota, where it intersects TX 6. You are then about 20 miles south of College Station. Although mostly two-lane roads, this route includes the unexpected attraction of driving through the town of Cut and Shoot. If you're driving through the northeast part of Texas (e.g. from Arkansas on I-30 or northern Louisiana on I-20), ask for directions (see contact information below).
